How to Become a Licensed Esthetician in Michigan

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Eligible
Meet these basic requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years old at start of program and 17 years old to take State Board Licensing exam
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent
Step 2: Enroll in Our 750-Hour Esthetics Program
At Michigan College of Beauty, our 750-hour Esthetics Program is designed to give you a strong foundation in skincare through theory, hands-on learning, and client experiences.
Step 3: Get Real-World Experience in Our Student Spa
You’ll gain experience working with clients under the guidance of our licensed instructors.
Step 4: Apply for Licensure in Michigan
Once you’ve completed and graduated from our 750-hour esthetics program, you can submit your application for state licensure exams. Our career counselor can assist you through the process.
- Create an account on the MiPLUS portal
- Submit your application
- Pay the application and exam fees
- Schedule your state exams through PSI Exams
Step 5: Take and Pass Your Michigan State Board Exams
To become licensed in Michigan, you’ll need to pass both the Practical and Written exams:
Step 6: Receive Your License and Start Your Career
Once you pass both exams, you’ll receive your official esthetician license from the State of Michigan. You’ll be legally allowed to work in salons, spas, med-spas, or even open your own business.
Step 7: Renew Your License Every Two Years
Michigan esthetician licenses must be renewed every two years. A renewal notification will be sent to both your mailing and email address on file approximately 90 days prior to your license expiration date.
